Tigers beat the Panthers in another narrow win

At this point, you pretty much know what you are going to get from a Plainfield North and Oswego softball game.

The teams met twice during the regular season, with each team winning one of the games by a 1-0 score.

So it was no surprise that Wednesday’s Class 4A Plainfield North Regional semifinal was decided by a 1-0 margin with the 10th-seeded Tigers taking the win and advancing to play second-seeded Downers Grove South on Saturday morning.

Sam Mallinder had six strikeouts in the complete-game effort for Plainfield North. She also had two hits, as did Jessie Davidenko and Ryan Shaughnessy.

Lincoln-Way Central 12, Romeoville 0: Amanda Weyh tossed a perfect game, striking out 11 in the process, as the Knights breezed into the championship of their own Class 4A regional.

The Knights used two big innings, a five-run first and a seven-run third, to account for all of their offense. Weyh helped her own cause with two hits and four RBIs, while Carly Alvers and Gabriella Gedville each added two-hit games.

Joliet West 11, Minooka 0: The Tigers wasted no time taking control of this contest, as they plated nine runs in the first two innings to secure a spot in the Class 4A Minooka Regional title game.

Savannah Fierke struck out 11 batters, while Taylor Schwall powered the offense by driving in six runs. Joliet West will face Providence Catholic in the regional final Friday.

Joliet Catholic 2, Coal City 1: Noelle Chovanec delivered the game-winner for the Angels in the bottom of the eighth. That allowed JCA to reach the Class 3A LaSalle-Peru Regional championship.

Reed-Custer 7, Peotone 0: Antoinette Hill struck out 11 batters and scattered three hits in a complete-game shutout that lifted the Comets to the championship game of their own Class 2A sectional.

Hill, Meghan Faletti and Calla Kmetz each had two hits for Reed-Custer, which will face the winner of Thursday’s semifinal game between Beecher and Wilmington for the sectional title.

PREP BASEBALL

Marist 15, Joliet Central 3: The Steelmen hung in for awhile, but the Redhawks proved too much, scoring a combined 14 runs in the third and fourth innings to breeze to a win in the semifinal round of the Class 4A Joliet West Regional.

Lincoln-Way Central 12, Shepard 2: The Knights opened up a close game with a seven-run fourth inning and advanced to the Class 4A Marian Catholic Regional title game.

Johnny McGuire drove in three runs to pace the offense, while Ryan Kraft and Harry DuBois each struck out six during their time on the mound.

Joliet Catholic 20, Rich South 1: The Hilltoppers had no problem advancing into the Class 3A Rich Central Regional final.

Mike Gurka led the offensive onslaught with three hits and five RBIs.

Plainfield North 9, Naperville North 7: The Tigers had to come up with some extra inning heroics to advance in their own Class 4A Regional, scoring three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning after Naperville North posted one run in the top half.

GIRLS SOCCER

Sandburg 1, Lincoln-Way West 0: The Eagles scored only one goal, but it was enough to put an end to the Warriors’ season in the Class 3A Andrew Sectional semifinal.
