Lightning hit a parkway gas line on Western Avenue in Joliet on Friday morning.
The strike created an explosion and flames from the gas line that were said to be 30 feet high.
No one was injured.
“They had a lightning strike on a gas line right around 703 Western,” Fire Lt. Ted Rosado said.
The strike was reported to the fire department at 6:19 a.m.
“It was a huge, huge explosion,” said Councilwoman Jan Quillman, who lives in the neighborhood and could see the fire. “It’s shooting out of the ground 20 to 30 feet in flames.”
The fire was contained to the street parkway.
Both firefighters and Nicor were on the scene.
