Shorewood man announces 2020 run for State Senate

A Shorewood man announced he is running as a Republican to represent the Illinois State Senate’s 49th District, which includes all or parts of Aurora, Bolingbrook, Crest Hill, Joliet, Montgomery, Naperville, Oswego, Plainfield, Romeoville and Shorewood.

If elected for the Republican nomination, Thomas Scott McCullagh would challenge incumbent state Sen. Jennifer Bertino-Tarrant, D-Shorewood, who first was elected in 2012.

“I want to have a state where my children and everyone’s children can grow up and have a future,” McCullagh said in a news release. “I want Illinois to be a place where you know that when you buy a house, you can afford it. ... Everyone wants to live in a place where they know their voice and their opinion matters.”

McCullagh said he would prioritize tax and fee relief, restoring “fiscal sanity,” protecting gun rights and fighting against the “Madigan/Cullerton machine.”

“The tax and fee structure in Illinois is causing a mass outflow of residents to states with better tax rates,” McCullagh said.

McCullagh ran unsuccessfully in the spring for a spot on the Joliet Junior College Board of Trustees. He is a local small-business owner and serves on executive boards for a number of veterans organizations, according to the release.

He is married with two daughters.
