Overnight lane closures on the Interstate 80 bridges over the Des Plaines River in Joliet are expected to begin Monday, weather permitting.
A single lane closure in either direction of I-80 will be permitted between
9 p.m. and 5 a.m. on days when closures are necessary, according to a news release from the Illinois Department of Transportation. The closures are needed to perform steel repairs and replace bearings on the bridges, with most of the work taking place under both structures. The project is expected to be complete by the fall of 2020.
IDOT bridge maintenance engineer Sarah Wilson previously told The Herald-News “a handful” of bad bearings were detected in inspections, but all 1,000 bearings on the two bridges will be replaced because of their age.
