State Rep. Margo McDermed, R-Mokena, will offer legal residents interested in becoming citizens free assistance with their application at a workshop Aug. 17.

The workshop will be held with the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights.

"Navigating the citizenship process can be difficult," McDermed said in a news release. "We want to help make the process easier for legal immigrants."

The workshop will take place at the New Lenox Public Library at 10 a.m. Aug. 17 and will run until everyone has been helped. The library is located at 120 Veterans Parkway. To be eligible for citizenship, applicants must have been a legal resident of the U.S. for at least five years, or if married to a U.S. citizen, for three years.
