Several witnesses told police they saw a man on a bicycle approach a vehicle in Joliet Township and fire a gun multiple times at it.
About 12:40 p.m. Wednesday, a black Chevrolet Cruze near the 200 block of Luana and Edison roads was shot at by a man on a bicycle, Will County Sheriff’s Deputy Chief Dan Jungles said. The man rode up to the vehicle on his bicycle before firing shots, he said.
Witnesses said they saw the car drive away as the man continued to fire at it with a 9mm pistol, he said.
Deputies later found the car on fire in the 200 block of Louis Road, he said. Nobody was found inside the car, and nobody was reported injured during the incident, he said. Witnesses told deputies there were multiple people inside the car, he said.
A total of eight shell casings were recovered at the scene, Jungles said. He said the sheriff’s office is trying to track down the cyclist and investigate how the car caught fire. He said the Illinois State Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating the blaze.
“We don’t know if the fire was started by someone inside the vehicle or if the fire was started because of damage done to the vehicle,” Jungles said.
The car was leaking oil as it fled from the gunman, Jungles said, and the gunfire might have caused the vehicle to catch fire.
Witnesses said the shooter was not someone from the area, Jungles said.
