Plainfield School District 202’s food service provider will offer middle and high school students vegan lunch options this year.
Aramark, the district’s contracted food service provider, introduced fresher options at the make-your-own salad bar in Plainfield high schools. It also began offering a garden salad with egg at middle schools, according to a news release.
Vegan “chicken” nuggets will be on the middle and high schools’ menus beginning this month, too. Before this year, vegan options were available only by request, according to the release.
The district’s assistant superintendent for business and operations, Rick Engstrom, said the new options are healthy and can help the environment by offering alternatives to meat dishes.
“District 202 is committed to providing nutritious meals to all students,” Engstrom said.
He said Aramark uses student feedback and its own surveys to decide new menu options. The company will then put a new menu item, such as a loaded chicken pizza, on its high school menus for students to try.
