Lewis University, University of St. Francis earn high marks

U.S. News & World Report’s annual rankings recognized some local universities.

The publication recognized Lewis University in Romeoville as a top 20 regional university in the Midwest, according to a news release.

“Our focus on the careers of the future and educating students to become ‘master learners’ has made us a destination college for students,” Lewis President David Livingston said. “Our Catholic and Lasallian tradition also creates a supportive community atmosphere where all feel welcome.”

Lewis University saw score improvements across multiple areas, including top overall score, peer institution assessment and the percentage of classes under 20 students. The university said this accomplishment builds on gains made in recent years in graduation rates and successful job placement of graduates.

U.S. News also recognized the school on lists such as A+ schools for B students, college ethnic diversity, best undergraduate teaching, best value schools and best colleges for veterans.

The publication also recognized the University of St. Francis in Joliet for the 16th consecutive year, this time in its best colleges rankings. Schools in this category offer a full range of undergraduate majors, plus master’s and doctoral programs and groundbreaking research, according to a news release.

In past years, USF has been included in the master’s Midwest category, which generally includes institutions that awarded at least 50 master’s degrees and fewer than 20 doctoral degrees during a given year.

“We are pleased that outside organizations continue to recognize the quality of a University of St. Francis education,” USF President Arvid Johnson said. “Being recognized for our quality in these rankings helps to validate the efforts of our faculty, and provides us with many points of pride.”

USF also ranked No. 7 among all Illinois colleges, No. 4 among Illinois private schools and No. 2 among Catholic schools in Illinois. The university also was recognized on other U.S. News ranking lists as top performers in social mobility and ethnic diversity.
