McGuire won't seek reelection in 2020

State Sen. Pat McGuire announced Monday that he would not run for reelection in 2020.

In an email to members of the news media, McGuire, D-Joliet, said he would serve out his current term, which ends in January 2021.

“Representing the people of District 43 is an honor,” McGuire said. “We have accomplished a lot, and I look forward to accomplishing more in the next 15 months.”

McGuire was first elected to his seat in the state Senate in 2012, where he’s served on several committees.

He is a former teacher, school board member, Will County treasurer and Braidwood city clerk, according to his biography on the Illinois General Assembly website.

McGuire isn’t the first Will County state legislator to announce that the 2020 race is not in the plans. State Rep. Margo McDermed, R-Mokena, announced earlier this year that she wouldn’t run again for her seat next year.

His colleague in the state Senate, Jennifer Bertino-Tarrant, D-Shorewood, decided to run for Will County executive, after the current occupant of that seat, Larry Walsh Sr., announced he wouldn’t run for reelection next year.

McGuire could not immediately be reached Monday.
