Balich won't run for Will County executive

After his name appeared on a list as being interested in the Will County executive position, County Board member Steve Balich announced that he would actually not seek higher office.

Balich’s name appeared on a list of those who appeared on a nominating petition for the position on the Will County clerk’s website. He said he was not the one who signed his name, and speculated that others in his party wanted him to run. The county executive seat is up for grabs after the current executive, Larry Walsh Sr., D-Elwood, announced earlier this year he wouldn’t seek reelection in 2020.

“After careful consideration, I am withdrawing from the Will County Republican primary for Will County executive,” said Balich, R-Homer Glen.

Balich also announced his support for Nick Ficarello, the former Braidwood police chief running as a Republican, to become the next county executive.

“Nick Ficarello represents our best values, fiscally and morally,” Balich said.

Known for his enthusiastic conservative stances on social issues and taxes, Balich has been on the Will County Board since 2012, representing the 12th District. He previously served as Homer Township clerk for four years.
