Fire crews from the Lockport Township Fire Protection District spent about three and a half hours fighting an overnight fire at a car recycling yard. The fire department received the first call about 10:30 p.m. Thursday regarding several vehicles on fire. The business is in the 3500 block of South State Street, according to a news release.
The first engine company found stacks of about 70 to 80 crushed vehicles and a trailer full of tires engulfed in fire.
The stack of vehicles, where the main part of the fire was knocked down, which allowed the crews to use machinery from the facility to begin pulling apart the stacks. This also helped extinguish each vehicle.
An engine with foam from the Citgo Refinery was requested to assist in extinguishing the blaze. Mutual aid equipment from several departments covered Lockport’s stations.
No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire remains undetermined.
