Romeoville High senior Ryan Boots is among an elite group of students nationwide named as a semifinalist in the 2020 National Merit Scholarship Competition.
National Merit semifinalists advance to the next stage of the competition in which approximately 7500 students are named as finalists for $31 million in scholarships.
Over 1.5 million juniors in about 21,000 high schools entered the 2020 National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the 2018 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT), which served as an initial screen of program entrants.
The nationwide pool of semifinalists, representing less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors, includes the highest-scoring entrants in each state.
Scholarship winners in the 2020 competition will be announced in April. National Merit Scholarships award $2500 to each student who is named a national winner.
VVSD also had four students earn designation as Commended Student in the national scholarship competition.
Those students are Margaret Bozarth, Bolingbrook High School; Jacob Chow, Bolingbrook High School; Sara Magdziarz, Bolingbrook High School; and Arta Osmani, Romeoville High School.
Although NMSC Commended Students do not continue forward in the scholarship competition, they placed among the top 50,000 students nationwide among the 1.5 million students who entered the 2020 National Merit competition by taking the 2018 PSAT/NMSQT.
