Area roundup: Minooka girls volleyball claims win No. 22

The Minooka girls volleyball team collected its 22nd victory of the season by beating Romeoville, 25-11, 25-18, in a Southwest Prairie Conference battle Thursday night.

Heidi Bonde led the attack for the Indians with 10 kills, while Desiree Anderson chipped in eight kills.

Mia Alessio added 10 digs, while Zoey Seput provided 24 assists.

BOYS SOCCER

Minooka 2, Bolingbrook 0: Blake Brandenburg and Ben Joder each found the back of the net for the Indians, as they picked up a nonconference win.

Will Maurice recorded two saves for Minooka, now 13-9-1 on the season.

Plainfield North 4, Plainfield Central 1: The Tigers had plenty of offense in a Southwest Prairie Conference victory.

Bronson wins Pigskin Preview Player of the Week: Plainfield South running back Keith Bronson was awarded the Week 7 State Farm Agent Kevin Molloy Pigskin Preview Player of the Week.

Bronson ran for 196 yards on 33 carries with three touchdowns for the Cougars, who moved to 4-3 on the season with a win over Plainfield East.

MEN’S CROSS COUNTRY

JJC ranked 5th in nation: The Joliet Junior College men’s cross country team is ranked No. 5 in the National Junior College Athletic Association Division III poll released by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association on Wednesday.

“The recognition of being ranked in the country’s top five heading into the Region IV meet is nice, but the national championship race will be run on
Nov. 2,” said Wolves cross country coach Jeff DeGraw. “That is what our team is working toward, and that is where our focus is.”

Ranked ahead of the Wolves in the season’s third poll are No. 1 Mineral Area College (Missouri), No. 2 Suffolk County Community College (New York), No. 3 Harper College and fourth-ranked Bergen Community College (New Jersey).

The NJCAA Region IV championship meet will take place Oct. 26 in Galesburg. The NJCAA Division III national championships will take place Nov. 2 at Stanley Park in Westfield, Massachusetts.
