Joliet-area students named commended students, finalists

Several local students have been named a Commended Student in the 2020 National Merit Scholarship program.

A letter of commendation from the school and National Merit Scholarship Corporation, which conducts the program, will be presented by the principal to these scholastically talented seniors.

Joliet Catholic Academy president/principal Jeffrey Budz announced that Joliet Catholic Academy senior Makenzie Kaput has been named a Commended Student in the 2020 National Merit Scholarship Program.

MCHS announces 2 Commended Students in the 2020 National Merit Scholarship Program

Minooka Community High School Principal Bryan Zwemke announced that Bryson Laken and Muhammad Saleh have been named Commended Students in the 2020 National Merit Scholarship Program.

D. 202 announces Commended Students in the 2020 National Merit Scholarship Program

Seventeen District 202 high school seniors have been named Commended Students in the 2020 National Merit Scholarship Program.

Lincoln-Way 210 National Merit Semifinalists and Commendable Students

Lincoln-Way Central High School had two seniors named as Semifinalists in the 2020 National Merit Scholarship Program. Lincoln-Way East had five and Lincoln-Way West had three.

These academically talented seniors now have the opportunity to continue in the competition for 7,600 National Merit Scholarships worth about $31 million that will be announced in spring 2020.

Lincoln-Way Central: George Burchfield, Chelsea Verheyen

Lincoln-Way East: Alexander DesJardins, Jacob Kamper, Kira Martin, Abigail McCreary, Garrett Peterson 

Lincoln-Way West: Steven Beallis, Emma Huelsmann, Madeline McDermott

Additionally, Lincoln-Way had 37 seniors announced as Commended Students: 11 from Lincoln-Way Central, 18 from Lincoln-Way East and eight Lincoln-Way West students.

Although they do not continue in the competition for National Merit  Scholarships, some of these students do become candidates for Special Scholarships sponsored by corporations and businesses.

The National Merit Scholarship Program is a nationwide competition for recognition and awards conducted by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation.

Commended Students posted among the top 50,000 scores of more than 1.5 million students who entered the 2020 competition by taking them 2018 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.
