There are so many fools out there. Thousands — tens of thousands — blithely driving back and forth across the Interstate 80 bridge over the Des Plaines River, day after day after day.
If only they knew what James M. Sweeney, the president-business manager of Local 150 of the International Union of Operating Engineers, knows, maybe they would be a bit more nervous about crossing the bridge. They might even stay off it all together, just like James M. Sweeney does.
Sweeney said in an email that he will not drive across the bridge, “nor will scores of infrastructure professionals” he personally knows.
In the email, which Edward Maher, communications director of Local 150, insisted Sweeney actually wrote himself, Sweeney also claimed an unidentified bridge engineer “said she wouldn’t drive her car across the bridge.”
