A court ruling overturned an election result for the Valley View School District 365U Board.
Will County Circuit Court Judge Roger Rickmon ruled Tuesday that a recount of ballots from the April election resulted in James “JT” Boudouris winning reelection over Sandra Carlson.
After the election, it appeared Carlson had defeated Boudouris by three votes for the third and final open seat on the board. District 365U includes public schools in Bolingbrook and Romeoville.
Boudouris contested the results of the election. He filed a petition in court for a recount, according to a news release from the school district.
At issue were the results in five precincts in which eight ballots were not properly initialed by election officials and therefore should not have been counted, according to Rickmon’s ruling.
The recount resulted in Boudouris leading Carlson by five votes.
Boudouris said Tuesday he was pleased with the ruling. He said he had the “utmost respect” for Carlson and that challenging the results “wasn’t anything personal.”
“It is my opinion that the law was followed,” he said. “The result was exactly how the law said it should have played out.”
Carlson said she had no problem with a recount but all ballots should have been recounted. She added that she felt the requirement of initials on ballots was also antiquated and that she’d be working with legislators to change the law.
“In that way, it feels a little bit unfair,” she said.
The Will County Clerk’s Office said in a news release it was “disappointed” by the judge’s ruling and argued that if uninitialed ballots were to be disregarded in those precincts, “the standard should have been applied to every precinct in the district.”
The clerk’s office issued a statement saying it was prepared to “devote resources needed for a district-wide examination of all ballots” while emphasizing it took no interest in which candidates won.
