On Sept. 13, Amazon presented a local Girl Scouts council with a special surprise -- $20,000 for the organization to fund STEM programs for young girls through 2020.
Employees from Amazon’s Joliet fulfillment center visited the Girl Scouts of Greater Chicago and Northwest Indiana to announce the donation.
The donation will go towards expanding the GirlSpace program, a year-round after school educational program encouraging life skills and learning, at the Girl Scouts’ gathering place in Joliet.
Part of the program’s educational core is developing STEM skills for young girls, skills that Amazon’s General Manager Brian Fontenot believes are essential.
Girl Scouts of Greater Chicago and Northwest Indiana will use the donation to support STEAM programming for almost 200 girls from the Joliet area who are expected to participate in GirlSpace this upcoming school year.
