On Thursday, the Will County Central Democratic Committee announced its recommendation to fill a vacancy on the County Board.
The party’s screening committee unanimously selected Sherry Newquist, 63, of Steger, to fill a seat representing District 1, once occupied by Laurie Summers, D-Crete, according to a news release. Newquist was one of four applicants.
Newquist has lived in Steger since 1980. She has a Master’s of Business Administration from the University of Chicago and worked in the financial industry. She also has worked at startups and owned a restaurant.
“I know very well what it is like to own a business in the county,” Newquist said.
Newquist said she’s been active in public life, holding seats on the Steger Village Board and the Steger-South Chicago Heights Public Library Board.
Newquist is a longtime Democrat and has been active as a precinct committeewoman and member of the Will County Democratic Party Executive Board.
Summers resigned from her seat last month to take a job with the Will County Coroner’s Office. She was elected to the board in 2016.
Newquist also praised Summers for her service on the board, especially for her work ensuring her constituents in District 1 had adequate access to county services.
The Will County Board will have to approve Newquist as a new member for her to officially fill Summers’ seat.
