Will County Sheriff’s deputies are looking for men who they describe disguised themselves with ski masks, abducted a man in New Lenox Township at gunpoint from his driveway and used his bank card at stores.
The incident occurred about 6 a.m. Friday when the man was leaving for work and he was eventually found unharmed in Indiana, the Will County Sheriff’s Office said.
A similar incident also occurred Nov. 16 at a bank in Frankfort, the Sheriff’s Office said.
In that case, a woman was at a bank ATM when she was forced by the abductors to access her accounts for cash, the Sheriff’s Office said.
The suspects then drove her to several stores to use her bank card, the sheriff’s office said. She was found unharmed in Chicago.
The sheriff’s office and Frankfort police are investigating both incidents.
“We are currently working with multiple agencies in order to identify and apprehend those involved in these crimes,” the Sheriff’s Office said.
The detectives believe four men in ski masks abducted both the man in New Lenox and the woman in Frankfort, the Sheriff’s Office said.
“The Will County Sheriff’s Office and the Frankfort Police Department are asking residents to be extra cautious of their surroundings while detectives continue their intense investigation into these crimes,” the sheriff’s office said.
One photo of the suspects released by the Sheriff’s Office shows the man inside a store wearing a ski mask, winter hat, layers of winter clothing, a coat and bright yellow-and-orange construction vests. Two other photos show the suspects wearing hooded jackets.
“The suspects entered the stores and while at the self-checkout line, made multiple small purchases such as a candy bar, then would get cash back in $100 or $50 increments with each purchase using the victims’ bank cards,” the Sheriff’s Office said.
The Sheriff’s Office said the suspects used the victims’ bank cards in at least three stores. Investigators are seeking additional video surveillance footage.
The suspects also were inside the stores using gift cards to avoid fraud alerts, the Sheriff’s Office said.
Anyone with information about the incidents or the suspects is asked to call the Sheriff’s Office’s investigations division at 815-727-8574 or the Frankfort police at 815-469-9435.
