Injured cyclist dies after apparent hit-and-run

A Joliet man found “gravely injured” on the side of Plainfield Road in Crest Hill early Monday died in the hospital four days later.

Dennis Ledenbach, 46, was bicycling home from Anthony’s Restaurant & Pub near Louis Joliet Mall when he was apparently struck by a vehicle and left by the side of the road, Crest Hill Police Chief Ed Clark said.

A motorist spotted Ledenbach’s bicycle just west of Caton Farm Road about 4 a.m. and then found Ledenbach, police said.

Ledenbach was transported to AMITA Saint Joseph Medical Center in Joliet, police said.

An online fundraiser set up for Ledenbach said he was scheduled to be taken off life support the day he died.

Ledenbach had suffered brain damage and was in a coma, according to the fundraiser.

The fundraiser said all donations will go toward his funeral expenses.

The police ask anyone with information to call Investigator Joel Steen at 815-741-5115. Anonymous tips can be left with Crime Stoppers at 800-323-6734.

“We’re looking for any kinds of leads to find out what happened,” Clark said earlier this week.

On Saturday, Clark said police had yet to develop leads on the suspected hit-and-run driver.

An autopsy conducted Saturday did not reveal a cause of death, according to the Will County Coroner’s Office.

The preliminary cause of death was “pending further studies,” according to the coroner’s office.
