The Will County Resource Recovery and Energy Division is offering two grant programs as a way to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Earth Day and encourage environmentally-friendly actions.

Municipalities, park districts, libraries and other taxing bodies are able to apply for a grant for up to $3,500 to install level 2 electronic vehicle charging stations to encourage residents to use electric vehicles according to a news release. There are also grants for $250 for level 1 charging stations available.

Educational and park district entities can also apply for a program for reimbursement of up to $500 on the installation or switch out of water fountains to refill stations. There are 20 grants available. They are meant to encourage residents to use durable, refillable bottles and reduce water waste.

Will County Executive Larry Walsh, who oversees the division within the Will County Land Use Department, said in the release he is excited to see opportunities to improve "green" infrastructure.

"Will County residents have consistently shown their awareness of environmental issues and we continually seek convenient methods of offering sustainable options to them," Walsh said in the release. "Our land use department continues to lead the way in creating programs that work to preserve our natural resources and make it easy for our residents to participate.”

The grant applications can be found on the front page of WillCountyGreen.com, the county's "green" website. The deadline to apply is July 1.
