LocalLit spotlight: ‘Stories of a Sheltered Suburbanite’

Joliet author Colleen H. Robbins wrote this collection of short stories based on actual events.

I have wanted to read “Stories of a Sheltered Suburbanite” since I heard an excerpt at a WriteOn Joliet (adult critique group) meeting a few months ago.

The excerpt was a fictional retelling of a significant historical event through the viewpoint of a child. The story was poignant; I listened, spellbound.

One of these stories, “Jimmy Next Door,” by Colleen H. Robbins, was read during WriteOn Joliet’s first open mic event in 2013. I’ll provide a link to that video in Tuesday’s review.

I finally bought my copy Thursday night and plan to read it this weekend. A review of the book will appear in Tuesday’s LocalLit newsletter.

Here is its Amazon description: “A woman with ‘Too Many Kids.’ A child watching the hero next door. A toy saving lives on the battlefront. Not everything is as it seems, particularly to the sheltered.

“’Stories of a Sheltered Suburbanite’ contains the short stories, poems and humorous vignettes of Colleen H. Robbins, with a particular focus on military and suburban life.”

Know more: Each week LocalLit will deliver an original short and family-friendly story or book review by a local author to the newsletter’s subscribers.

Stories should be edited and between 1,000 and 7,500 words. Featured authors will be spotlighted before the newsletter runs.

To submit, call Denise M. Baran-Unland at 815-280-4122 or email dunland@shawmedia.com.
