A Lynwood man was arrested after he robbed a Speedway gas station in Crete, police said.
The arrest of Cordairo Mitchell, 30, of the 20100 block of Willow Street was part of an ongoing investigation of gas station robberies in Will County and northwest Indiana, according to Crete Police Chief Scott Pieritz.
Mitchell was arrested Thursday on charges of armed habitual felon and armed robbery in connection with the robbery of a Speedway station, he said.
Pieritz said other suspects were detained as well, and additional charges against Mitchell and the others are pending “review of additional evidence.”
Since October, numerous armed robberies occurred in gas stations in Will County and northwest Indiana, including the Speedway and Circle K stations in Crete, Pieritz said.
The suspects wore masks, gloves and used stolen vehicles with obscured license plates while committing the robberies, Pieritz said. He said the suspects stole cigarettes and cash.
Crete detectives worked with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives to investigate these cases, he said.
Investigators gathered enough evidence to obtain a search warrant for a residence in Lynwood, Pieritz said. The warrant was executed Thursday and investigators found five handguns, drugs, two stolen vehicles and “other items of evidentiary value,” he said.
Pieritz thanked Crete police, ATF agents, the Will County State’s Attorney’s Office, the Will County Sheriff’s Office gang unit and the Lynwood police for their role in the investigation.
