Snapchat gun photo prompts 80 minute school lockdown

Homer Junior High School was put on lockdown for nearly an hour and a half Thursday morning after a student reportedly received a Snapchat photo of a juvenile holding what appeared to be a firearm, police said.

Lockport Deputy Police Chief Ron Huff said his department determined the juvenile who made the post on Snapchat lives in Peotone and that the photo did not appear to have been sent as a threat.

“It did not appear to be threat," Huff said. "However, we gave it to the Peotone Police Department to investigate it further.”

Huff said the Snapchat post, which was created Wednesday, showed a picture of the juvenile holding what appeared to be a firearm but it was difficult to determine whether it was an actual gun.

Huff said the Peotone juvenile and the student who reported the social media post follow each other on Snapchat but they are not friends.

Huff said the student made the report lives in Lockport but attends Homer Junior High School.

The junior high school was placed on lockdown for about 80 minutes as a precautionary measure, according to the sheriff's office.

School officials lifted the lockdown after determining no threat had been made, according to the Will County Sheriff's Office.
