When Gae was promoted to lieutenant, Gae became “in charge” of all the county buildings, which included the courthouse and the Will County Office Building, Denise said. As much as Gae enjoyed it, she “always missed working with juveniles,” Denise said.
But Gae did enjoy being part of a coalition to China in the 1980s, Denise said and seeing the way China operated its police departments, Denise said.
“It was quite the highlight and one of the nice things she could talk about during her career,” Denise said.
That was not the case with the ceramic shop murders.
On Aug. 20, 1983, Milton Johnson fatally stabbed Marilyn Baers, 45, Barbara Dunbar, 38, Pamela Ryan, 29 and Agnes Ryan, 75, inside a ceramics shop on Cass Street in Joliet, according to a 2015 Herald-News story.
Denise said Gae and another office were the first on the scene. Someone outside the shop had flagged Gae down, she added.
