Baran-Unland: Why do you feel this event has taken off?
Morgan: When Alaina and I created Gifting For Thrifting and were trying to plan our first event, we felt a little bit discouraged because we felt as if we weren’t being taken seriously since we were just 15 and 16 years old; however, we were extremely passionate about our idea and truly wanted to help people, so we were determined to put on a successful event for our community.
Since then, I feel like our events have been a success because hundreds of people have really benefited from our free pop-up stores! From our first event to our second event, we saw so many people come back to thrift with us again, and to Alaina and me, that was so special to see!
We also witnessed a ton of growth in the number of attendees we had from our first event in February to our most recent event in November 2019 largely due to the fact that we have been able to advertise through getting articles published in newspapers, distributing flyers at food pantries, and spreading the word on our social media and website giftingforthrifting.com.
Alaina: I think the event has taken off like this because of all the wonderful people who have helped us spread the word about our event. Everyone who yells someone else about our event or shares one of our posts helps us get the word out to the people who come!
Baran-Unland: What's the most popular type of clothing item at these events?
Morgan: A wide variety of clothing is thrifted at each event! We have seen all different people come to our events from children to seniors, and they have thrifted anything from a The North Face winter coat to an awesome pair of Nike tennis shoes! This is possible due to the community’s incredible donations, so thank you to everyone who has contributed to the success of GFT!
Alaina: The most popular item we have donated is women’s clothing. Since women switch out their clothes more often than men, women usually have more to donate. At our event, I would say that the most popular item is kids’ clothes and women’s clothes probably, but we have so many different people come in that clothes in all sizes go!
Baran-Unland: For people who have never tried thrifting, why do you encourage them to come out?
Morgan: Thrifting is SO fun! Although you aren’t always getting items of clothing that are brand new, they are new to you so it feels awesome when you find something that you love!
I love thrifting because, as a high school student who doesn’t have a paying job, it is way more affordable to thrift instead of shop at a regular store, and through Gifting For Thrifting, people, myself included, have the opportunity to shop around our pop-up thrift store for
free, so it is affordable for anyone!
Alaina: For anyone who hasn’t been thrifting before, you’re missing out! Thrifting allows you to get “new” clothes for cheap, or free in our case, and it allows you to feel good in what you’re wearing and what you’re spending! In addition, vintage clothes are really “in” right now, so a lot of people go thrifting to get clothes that were popular decades ago.
I would definitely recommend thrifting to anyone who hasn’t been before because you never know what you’ll find! [In the case of our event I can confirm that you will find some pretty amazing clothes!].
