Maintain a healthy social distance and pray with a larger church family with “Prayers on the Go.”

The Plainfield Congregational Church United Church of Christ will offer a drive-thru prayer program for the first time Saturday and then every following Saturday through May 31.

Joan Caton, a member of the PCCUCC’s church council and revitalization committee, said attendees will participate in general and personalized prayers with several church members as they move through the church’s carport.

“We’re not going to hug or shake their hands,” Caton said. “We’re just trying to console through prayer.”

Depending on the number of attendees waiting in line, the entire service will take about 3 to 5 minutes, Caton said.

“Granted if someone’s having a difficult experience, it might take longer,” Caton said. “We’re not going to say, ‘Sorry, your time’s up.’ ”

PCCUCC’s pastor, the Rev. Melbalenia Evans, and other laypeople from the church will be available for additional spiritual support on request, Caton said.

The initial reason for the program was to give young adults an opportunity for communal prayer in the midst of their busy lives,” Caton said.

“Millennials don’t always like the structure of church,” Caton said. “They still want to be spiritual, and they still want to connect with God and still be members of a church and do social activities. It’s great that they do that.

“But we thought that ‘Prayer on the Go’ could give them some church on Saturday on the way to take the kids to this or that and still feel like, ‘Hey that felt good’ and ‘That was uplifting.’ ”
