Lawsuit: Joliet Harrah's casino security guards failed to protect woman from assailant

A woman’s lawsuit claims Harrah’s casino in Joliet failed to provide adequate security when she was attacked and robbed at knifepoint at the valet entrance two years ago.

Joliet police officers arrested 58-year-old Darryl Allen on March 24, 2018, after he allegedly attempted to rob Gemma Cook by placing a knife to her throat at the downtown casino, according to police and court records.

Allen was charged with armed violence, attempted armed robbery, aggravated battery, unlawful use of a weapon and aggravated assault. His case is scheduled for a June 4 bench trial.

Cook filed a lawsuit against the casino Monday that claimed security guards failed to perform their jobs and otherwise “would have prevented or otherwise deterred the armed robbery.”

Cook’s lawsuit also claimed the casino failed to provide adequate security and exposed her to “foreseeable and unreasonable risk of harm or bodily assault.”

Cook suffered a laceration to her neck from Allen’s knife, abrasions on her body, anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder and other physical and mental injuries as a result of the incident, the lawsuit said.

“These losses are permanent and continuing in nature,” Cook’s lawsuit said.

Alex Boryszewski, marketing director for Harrah’s casino, said the business does not comment on pending litigation.

Cook’s attorney, George Bliss, declined to comment.

Joliet police said Allen fled after the attack as Cook’s boyfriend chased him. Casino security guards stopped and detained Allen until officers arrived on the scene, police said.
