Mother’s Day brings back memories of my mom’s traits of being organized and having fun. For my sisters and me, small household chores came first on Saturdays and during summer vacation. After breakfast, Mom made out lists of several things for us to do (make beds, put away toys, dust, vacuum, clean mirrors), and we had to get them done before rushing outside to play. As a kid, I wasn’t thrilled about the lists, but I see their value today. Mom would organize outings in the station wagon to parks or the farm, and she would bring along a picnic basket filled with sandwiches, snacks and drinks for us to enjoy. Speaking of food, my first-grade teacher had our class copy a recipe from the blackboard, then paste it onto construction paper and take it home as a Mother’s Day gift. Mom followed the recipe, and “Jimmy’s Coffee Cake” became a family favorite. It was delicious. Thanks, Mom!
