South Chicago Street in Joliet should reopen late Friday afternoon, the Illinois Department of Transportation said.
A short section of South Chicago Street, also Illinois Route 53 and U.S. Route 52 at that point, has been closed since heavy rains on Sunday buckled pavement under a railroad viaduct.
The closure just south of Interstate 80 has blocked a major truck route to intermodal yards in Joliet and Elwood forcing semitrailers onto other roads in Joliet.
IDOT issued a news release on Thursday afternoon saying emergency repairs have started are "anticipated to be completed by, weather permitting, late Friday afternoon. The road would reopen "shortly after."
The repair work includes patching, milling, resurfacing and pavement striping, IDOT said.
Flood water from the heavy rains churned up chunks of asphalt.
South Chicago Street has been closed between Patterson Road and Doris Avenue.
The eastbound I-80 exit ramp to southbound Chicago Street also is closed.
IDOT has recommended the Richards Street exit to Mills Road and U.S. 52/Manhattan Road as an alternate route.
Truck drivers and motorists also have been using the Briggs Street exit, leading to heavy traffic on roads in the south end of Joliet.
