South Chicago Street between Patterson Road and Doris Avenue was opened back up Friday following emergency pavement repairs, the Illinois Department of Transportation announced.
A short section of South Chicago Street, also Illinois Route 53 and U.S. Route 52 at that point, has been closed since heavy rains on Sunday buckled pavement under a railroad viaduct.
The closure just south of Interstate 80 blocked a major truck route to intermodal yards in Joliet and Elwood forcing semitrailers onto other roads in Joliet.
Flood water from the heavy rains churned up chunks of asphalt.
IDOT issued a statement Thursday afternoon saying emergency repairs had started were "anticipated to be completed by, weather permitting, late Friday afternoon. The road would reopen "shortly after."
The repair work includes patching, milling, resurfacing and pavement striping, IDOT said.
