The Will County Auditor's Office announced it has put in place an independent, third-party hotline for reporting potential fraud in county government.
Will County Auditor Duffy Blackburn had contracted with BKD, LLP of Oak Brook, Illinois, to offer the IntegraReport hotline, according to a county news release.
IntegraReport is an anonymous hotline offering a way for employees to report potentially fraudulent behavior, business misconduct or unacceptable activities contrary to the county's stated policies and procedures.
“In these current times of adverse circumstances and when agencies or employees come under intense pressure, it's more important than ever to be proactive to deter and prevent fraud," Blackburn said in the release.
Blackburn, a certified fraud examiner (CFE), also noted that government and public administration is among the leading industries for fraud, citing the 2018 Association of Fraud Examiner's Report to the Nations. He added that according to government fraud data, about 31% of fraud incidents occurred at the local level.
The report added that among the leading methods for detecting fraud are hotline tips, internal audits and management review. Tips were the most common means of detection in 40% of cases, according to the report.
Blackburn said in the release that a hotline "ensures our citizens that the county and my office continues to be proactive in keeping up with industry trends in fraud detection."
