Fifth-grader Kylee Graunke from Irene King Elementary School has been honored as the AAA School Safety Patroller of the Year for the state of Illinois.

Graunke was selected from numerous candidates from across the state based on her leadership qualities, safety knowledge, and school and community involvement.

Graunke was nominated by her teacher, Katie Novak, who said that Graunke also delivers mail throughout the building and was selected as a monitor for her peers during arrival and dismissal times.

“Kylee is trustworthy and because of this I nominated her,” Novak said in a news release from the AAA School Safety Patrol. “She is a strong communicator, identifying issues and sharing information with staff, excels in managing her time so that she may deliver mail around the building before the bell rings and is a friend to fellow students helping them academically, socially and emotionally.”

Graunke has also participated in the school’s craft club, robotics club and student council.

She is involved with her community and donates time at Feed My Starving Children and a local animal shelter. She has donated toys and clothes for those in need and is a Girl Scout.

A proud tradition since 1920, the AAA School Safety Patrol now includes more than 600,000 patrollers in schools nationwide.

Nick Jarmusz, director of public Affairs for AAA – The Auto Club Group. said in the release,“She truly embodies the qualities of leadership and service that the AAA School Safety Patrol program seeks to instill in participating students.”
