A semitrailer carrying a tank of water slammed into an SUV, which led to a multi-vehicle crash on Interstate 55 in the Channahon area, according to the Illinois State Police.
The four-car collision on Thursday afternoon caused several people to suffer minor injuries and they were transported to local hospitals, Illinois State Police said in a statement.
About 1:50 p.m., troopers with Illinois State Police District 5 responded to a four-vehicle crash and preliminary information indicated the vehicles were traveling on I-55 in the southbound lane at Arsenal Road in the right lane, police said.
Two SUVs and a semitrailer were slowed down for traffic ahead, police said.
For “unknown reasons,” the driver of another semitrailer carrying a tank of water who was behind the other vehicles “was unable to come to a stop in time” and struck the rear end of an SUV, police said.
The impact of the collision caused the SUV to strike the rear end of another SUV, which then struck the rear end of a semitrailer, police said.
At close to 2 p.m., all southbound lanes of I-55 at Arsenal Road were closed for the traffic investigation. The left lane at the scene was re-opened about 3:10 p.m. but the right lane remains closed, police said.
