Growing up in Woodridge, I didn't spend much time on waterways. When I moved to Ottawa in 2002, a friend introduced me to canoeing. We dropped our canoes in the Vermilion River at Hopalong Cassidy canoe launch in Streator, and I was hooked. Since then, I've canoed numerous times on the Fox River near Wedron, even introducing my suburban family to the activity. I'm lucky enough to live in the town of two rivers – the Fox and the Illinois rivers. I'm even luckier to have friends with boats... And yes, the Asian carp do fly, or at least appear to.
I’ve grown to appreciate and respect the power of the rivers, as I've seen several major floods and have witnessed the destruction floodwaters can have on property and personal lives. Fortunately, most of the time the rivers provide a relaxing getaway for boaters, fishermen and birders – with bald eagles a common sight in the colder months.
