Joliet council will try again Monday for an interim city manager

The Joliet City Council still has prospects for the interim city manager job.

“There are a couple of people we’re going to talk to Monday night,” Councilman Michael Turk said Friday after the council held its second special meeting this week to try to find an interim city manager.

The council met in closed session to discuss the issue as it did Tuesday night when local attorney Michael Hansen appeared to be a favored prospect for the job. Hansen, however, turned it down the next day, saying there were personal reasons, as well as his concern that he did not have full support from the council.

Turk would not say any more Friday about the results of the closed-door session.

The discussion with the two prospective candidates presumably would occur during another closed session after the council’s workshop meeting Monday,

Council members Don Dickinson and Bettye Gavin did not attend the Friday meeting.

Several city staff members reportedly have been approached about the position and have turned it down.

Before Hansen, interim City Attorney Sabrina Spano reportedly had majority support to become the interim city manager. She considered taking the job, but later declined.

Interim City Manager Steve Jones is leaving Aug. 7, and has said he will not stay beyond that date. He’s been the interim city manager since June 2019.

Jones took the position after interim City Manager Marty Shanahan was removed by a divided council.

The city has not had a permanent city manager in place since October 2018 when David Hales left with a buyout after less than a year on the job.
