A car crashed into one of the pillars outside the front entrance of the Cathedral of St. Raymond Nonatus and destroyed one statue.
At 1:50 a.m. Thursday, the car crashed into one of the pillars of the cathedral at 604 N. Raynor Ave., according to Joliet Fire Deputy Chief Jeff Carey.
The driver and passenger were taken by ambulance to AMITA Health Saint Joseph Medical Center in Joliet, Carey said.
“No one else was injured,” he said.
He said the police are investigating the incident. Joliet police Lt. Christopher Botzum did not immediately respond to a message about the crash on Thursday.
Carey said there was minor damage to the building and a church statue was destroyed.
The site of the car crash at the cathedral still had yellow tape and orange cones on Thursday afternoon. White scuff marks and cracks were still visible on the pavement.
One of the pillars had large cracks from the crash.
Pieces of the statue were placed in a large container and another statue that was lying on the ground appeared intact.
