To the Editor:
In the midst of the uncontrolled COVID-19 pandemic, the stock market soars, but millions are being laid off, small businesses are going bankrupt and unemployment continues to rise. How can that be? We must face the truth and recognize openly: Our nation, our beloved country has morphed, with the help of an indifferent Republican leadership, abetted by some unheeding Democrats, from a democracy into an oligarchy. No wonder Trump and his zombie enablers admire Putin so much.
No one gets enraged by a plutocratic oligarchy, but we’re kissing our representative government goodbye. Realize, please, plutocratic oligarchy translates into low, unlivable workers’ wages, less food on the table, no money for rent, unmanageable medical bills, severe unemployment, income inequality, perpetual war, crumbling infrastructure, lack of government services like the Postal Service, suffering economies for state and local governments, diminished education for children, inability to fight the corporate causes of climate change bringing fires, floods, hurricane, the coronavirus in the wake of extremes in the weather. This is what the Trump administration has either brought upon us or exacerbated. Do you really want four more years of this destructive misery? Vote.
Government by and for the rich-man’s corporations brings affluence to the already rich, while public and private needs for 90% of the rest of us decline. That’s plutocratic oligarchy, inequity and maldistribution of wealth. Oligarchy hides behind the smoke screen of the Trump presidency, his anti-immigration, his racism, his genderism, his anti-liberalism, his accusations of so-called “socialism.” He is anti-union, exploitative and predatory.
Trump has led us to mistrust one another, and that’s the biggest threat to whatever may be left of our democracy. Joe Biden’s deep humanity, experience and proven statesmanship offers a glimmer of hope for the equality and brother/sisterhood of all Americans.
