It's only 38 pages, but "Brian Says: Quotes from a Restless Mind" by Brian Birkey of Channahon is not a book you read in one sitting.
That's because Birkey's book is packed with short bursts of wisdom, most of them just one or two lines long, that's either so amazingly deep or jaw-dropping simple in its truth, that it's best to read just a couple at a time and let the words sink into you.
Here is the Amazon description: "During high school, Brian decided that he really wanted to be a writer. He has faced many challenges because of birth defects, a learning disability, and a mental illness.
"In this volume of his work, he has included quotes that he wrote that are inspirational, deep, and some that are just plain funny. Sharing his work has been his dream and he hopes that this work can touch you like it has so many people around him."
Here are a few of Birkey's sayings to give you an idea:
"When you give up, people will stomp on you like lions, but your true friends will pull you through the hard times."
"When you cry, you regain back the happiness that was once there."
"The battle of your mind will always be a strong battle to fight."
"If you eat a rat, you will never feel the same again."
"If you see the earth as it is, you are not going to go far on earth."
"If the shadow of darkness comes after you, hold onto your faith."
"You will wake up one of these days, and you will become the person you know you are."
Birkey also shares his Christian poetry at at AllPoetry under Beautiful Dreamer23. Although his poetry isn't traditional in the sense of rhyming, it has thoughtful structure and wonderful cadence.
Buy "Brian Says: Quotes from a Restless Mind" by Brian Birkey it for just 99 cents on Amazon.
I highly recommend this book to anyone. It's only available as an eBook, but I think it would make a terrific graduation present for young people eighth grade and up.
