The city of Joliet will begin taking applications on Thursday for its winter snow shoveling program.
Applications will be taken until Oct. 9, and the city will then hold a lottery to determine who will receive the service for the 2020-21 winter season.
The city typically gets more requests for the service than it can serve with the amount of money available. But Joliet expects to serve more than 250 residents with $53,000 in federal Community Development Block Grant funds available this year.
Those eligible for the program are residents 65 or older and those with doctor-verified disabilities.
Applications can be found online at joliet.gov/snowprogram. They may be submitted by email to NeighborhoodServices@joliet.gov or in person at City Hall located at 150 W. Jefferson St.
The service is provided for snowfalls of two or more inches. Contractors plow the driveway and shovel the sidewalk from the front door to the driveway.
The program is restricted to single-family residences, and other requirements may apply, the city noted in a news release Tuesday.
"The program is designed to make it easier for seniors and persons with disabilities to leave their homes for necessities and getting to medical appointments by providing snow removal from paved driveways and service sidewalks at their homes," according to the release.
Those selected for the program will be contacted by the city.
