Violet’s grandmother is Carol Lundquist of Minooka. Lundquist had read about the contest in a newspaper and encouraged Violet to enter it, Amy Manning, Violet’s mother, said.
This meant after Carol read an installment, Violet drew and submitted an illustration to represent it, Amy said.
New installments and illustration themes were released over the course of seven weeks, according to Scholastic.
“Violet did submit all 34 installments,” Amy said. “I’ve got them all in a folder. It’s kind of cool to go through them and see the other drawings. The most exciting is the one for Scholastic, the winning one.”
In all, 42, 142 original illustrations were created by children ages 7 to 12, according to Scholastic.
Amy said Violet could chose her own medium, as long as it was colorful. Violet said she chose paint markers because Carol had them on hand.
