With nearly 5,000 members and growing, "It's All About The Dress. Pay It Forward" is designed for members to post dresses they are giving away for free to people in need.
The recipients, in turn, are to continue "paying it forward" by blessing another person in need with the dress when they're done with it. Recipients only pay for shipping, if shipping is needed.
To keep shipping costs to a minimum, recipients are encouraged to choose dresses for their home state. And if a recipient can't pay the shipping, another member often donates that cost, too, said Tammie Key Holley of Mokena, who founded the group six months ago.
For local dresses, Holley and some of the other members offer to pick them up and drop them off.
"The response has been amazing. Everyone has been so generous," Holley, a social worker, said. "I just wanted to help someone."
