Allen, who is black, is suing former Joliet Police Chief Brian Benton, Joliet Deputy Police Chief Marc Reid and the city of Joliet over alleged racial discrimination.
Allen’s lawsuit alleges that he had been threatened with termination for speaking out against another officer’s racism. He contends that Benton at one point promised not to fire him if he withdrew a complaint filed with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission in 2016.
City officials have denied Allen's allegations. They have stated in legal documents responding to the lawsuit that the predicament began when Officer Michael Cochran initiated a complaint against Allen. Cochran contended he had been falsely accused by Allen of making derogatory remarks against black people.
An investigation by internal affairs determined that Allen had made false statements and that his conduct was unbecoming an officer.
Allen contends the department coaxed Cochran into initiating the complaint and that the department investigation was skewed to make it appear he was defaming a fellow officer.
