Five state champions, three second-place finishers, 23 all-staters and seven others who came up one victory shy of claiming state medals highlight the 2018-19 Herald-News All-Area Wrestling team. Here are this year's selections:
Robby Bates, Morris: The junior finished with a 37-9 record after placing sixth at 195 pounds in Class 2A. He placed third or better in six tournaments.
Andrew Bejarano, Plainfield South: The senior went 47-7 and took fourth in Class 3A at 285 pounds. He won four titles, including the sectional, and was a finalist in another tournament.
Jackson Beene, Seneca: The senior finished in fifth place in Class 1A at 152 pounds. He had a 43-4 record after winning five straight titles, including one at the sectional.
Ryan Boersma, Providence: The freshman went 44-7 after falling one victory shy of being an all-stater at 220 pounds in Class 3A. He won three titles and had six top-three finishes.
Kevin Countryman, Providence: Claimed fourth place at 145 pounds in Class 3A. The junior went 41-11 with two tournament titles and placed fourth or better in six tournaments.
Jacob Cronk, Lincoln-Way West: The senior was a four-time finalist in his first four tournaments. He went 35-8 and finished one victory short of earning a state medal.
Javen Estrada, Lincoln-Way West: The sophomore had a 36-7 record and had four top-three finishes in tournaments and was a state qualifier at 126 pounds in Class 3A.
Baylor Fernandes, Lockport: Won the Class 3A championship at 160 pounds to cap a 36-4 season. The senior two-time placer won five tournaments and finished second in another.
Jack Finnegan, Joliet Catholic: The sophomore finished 40-12 and fell one win short of earning a medal at 120 pounds in Class 2A. He had four top-three finishes in tournaments.
Alex Friddle, Coal City: The senior concluded a 53-0 season by winning the Class 2A title at 132 pounds. The four-time state medalist won all five of the tournaments that he was in.
Apollo Gothard, Lemont: The sophomore two-time medalist finished first in his first five tournaments before placing second at 220 pounds in the Class 2A finals to finish 46-3.
Jared Gumila, Plainfield North: The freshman finished 36-10 after qualifying at 132 pounds in Class 3A. He had four top-four tournament finishes and won the sectional.
DJ Hamiti, Joliet Catholic: Two-time state champion finished first at 126 pounds in Class 2A. The sophomore had a 42-4 record after winning four titles and placing second three times.
Daniel Jezik, Coal City: The junior won the Class 2A title at 182 pounds. The three-time state medalist finished with a 28-0 record and won all four of the tournaments that he was in.
Paul Keane, Peotone: Fell just short of repeating as a state champion after taking second in Class 1A at 120 pounds. The junior three-time finalist was 34-3 and won five tournaments.
Jake Kendall, Plainfield South: The senior posted a 37-10 record after taking sixth-place at 160 pounds in Class 3A. He had top-six finishes in five tournaments.
Cameron Klingler, Dwight: Posted a 38-5 record and finished fifth at 170 pounds in Class 1A. The senior won three tournament titles and placed second in another competition.
Grant LaDuke, Lemont: The junior went 30-6 after finishing third in Class 2A at 145. The two-time medalist won three titles, including the sectional, and took second twice.
Jake Lindsey, Providence: The former state champ and three-time medalist went 24-6 after taking third in Class 3A at 113 pounds. The senior had four top-three tournament finishes.
Nick Mihajlovich, Lincoln-Way East: The senior finished with a 49-5 record after taking fifth at 182 pounds in Class 3A. He won three titles and had four top-three tournament finishes.
Anthony Molton, Lockport: The three-time medalist and former state champ went 47-5 after finishing third at 126 pounds in Class 3A. The senior won four titles and took second once.
Jack Narine, Wilmington: The two-time state medalist finished with a 39-15 record after taking sixth place at 126 pounds in Class 1A. He had three top-four tournament finishes.
Drew Nash, Lemont: The junior fell one win short of earning a second state medal at 132 pounds in Class 2A. He finished 42-8 and had four top-three tournament finishes.
James Pierandozzi, Plainfield South: Had five top-three tournament finishes, including a sectional title. The junior went 33-7 after taking sixth place at 145 pounds in Class 3A.
Josh Ramos, Providence: The senior finished with a 41-9 record after falling one win shy of a state medal at 138 pounds in Class 3A. He also had six top-three tournament finishes.
Matt Ramos, Lockport: The Class 3A champion at 120 pounds only lost to nationally-ranked opponents. The 36-5 senior is a three-time state medalist who won three tournament titles.
Kyle Schickel, Lemont: The junior took second at 138 pounds in Class 2A to finish second for the third year in a row. He went 45-5 and had five top-three tournament finishes.
Evan Schiffman, Lemont: The freshman went 40-12 after taking fourth place in Class 2A at 106 pounds. He won three titles, including the sectional, and had four top-four finishes.
Jamel Sheppard, Plainfield Central: The senior finished at 44-10 after falling one win shy of a medal at 145 pounds in Class 3A. He collected four top-three tournament finishes.
Enzo Silva, Plainfield South: Finished 39-7 after getting injured in the sectional at 120 pounds in Class 3A. The senior, who placed last year, had four top-four tournament finishes.
Kaleb Thompson, Lockport: The junior claimed third place at 106 pounds in Class 3A. He finished 23-5 and won two titles and had five top-four finishes in tournaments.
Alex Villar, Plainfield East: The junior finished 39-5 after falling one win shy of a medal at 120 pounds in Class 3A. He won two two titles and also had four top-three finishes.
Ryan Wasielewski, Coal City: Finished with a 52-4 record after taking third place in Class 2A at 152 pounds. The senior won three tournaments and had five top-three finishes.
