Repair or repurpose: what to consider when it comes to jewelry

Do you have a broken piece of jewelry you are not sure what to do with? First make sure to consider the overall value of the piece.

“It needs to be determined if it is really worth repairing,” said Theresa Murphy, owner of the Joliet-based Newstar Jewelers. “Unfortunately, some pieces are just too worn to repair.”

If that is the case, Murphy said there are several options available to preserve the item’s sentimentality.

Consider, for instance, using part of the piece to create a new one.

“Maybe adding the top part of a ring onto a new band or turning a ring into a pendant,” Murphy said. “Even adding it into a bracelet is an option.”

You can also choose to use the stones from a piece and set them into a new mounting.

“This is great when you have multiple pieces that you wouldn’t wear,” Murphy said. “Combine the stones to make a piece of jewelry you will wear.”

Another option is recreating the piece.

“We can make a computer model of your grandma‘s or mom’s ring and make a new one that isn’t worn- resetting any stones into the new piece,” Murphy said. “Then you have one that looks like the original, but can be worn for years to come.”

The Newstar Jewelers team knows how sentimental jewelry can be.

“So we try to keep and/or use as much of the original as possible,” Murphy said. “If there is metal that we can’t use, we can make a disc pendant with it, so you still have the original piece to cherish in a new way.”
