Three things to know about custom jewelry

SPONSORED

Looking for a unique piece of jewelry for that special someone, or yourself, but can’t find exactly what you are looking for? Consider a custom design.

“We can create something with new stones that you pick out, stones that you may already have or a piece with no stones at all,” said Theresa Murphy, owner of the Joliet-based Newstar Jewelers. “We have taken stones from jewelry that people have inherited and recreated something more modern or more to their style; it becomes a new heirloom.”

Here are three things to know about custom-made jewelry:

1. The process

“We start by doing some rough sketches, then move to either a computer aided design (CAD) or a wax of the piece,” Murphy said.

From there, it is cast into metal (either silver, gold or platinum) and then finished (stones are set, if any, and polished). Some pieces can also be fabricated by using precious metal wire or bars and shaping them into the desired design.

“The design of the piece will determine which of these methods is best to use,” Murphy said.

2. The budget

Custom pieces may cost a bit more than ordering something out of a catalog.

“But it gives you a chance to show your style in a piece of jewelry,” Murphy said.

3. The end result

“When we do a custom piece, even though we have a sketch or a computer rendering of a finished piece, there is still a little leap of faith you need to take with your jeweler that the jewelry you have created will be perfect,” Murphy said.

To that end, you can count on Newstar Jewelers to take extra care in listening to customers and making sure they know the details customers are looking for when a piece is designed.

“We want it to be perfect for them,” Murphy said.
